Daily Jefferson County Union: Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce Hosts Coolest Thing Made in Wisconsin

Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce (WMC) is partnering with the Johnson Financial Group to host their eighth annual Coolest Thing Made in Wisconsin competition.

Last year, more than 100 products were nominated, including Fort Atkinson’s Hippychick Penny’s Soaps and Body Care and Lake Mill’s Seljan Company. This year’s nomination list will be released after the period ends, and the champion will be announced Oct. 19.

Companies and consumers alike are able to nominate a state-made product. The nomination period began Aug. 16 and ends Sep. 8.

The competition seeks to spotlight the state’s manufacturing industry, which generates almost $70 billion in economic output every year (over 18% of Wisconsin’s gross domestic product.)

“We’re excited to again use this fun contest to feature some of our fantastic manufacturers, the high-paying careers they create and the innovative, necessary products they make,” said WMC President & CEO Kurt R. Bauer in a press release.

The contest is open to Wisconsin manufacturers of all regions and products. With a reported 87% of manufacturers being small businesses, according to the National Manufacturers Association, the competition is also available to companies of all sizes.

Nick Novak, WMC vice president of communications and marketing, says that it all just depends on how much effort a company is willing to contribute.

“It’s really anybody’s game. It’s a great way to promote your own company and the careers you have available,” said Novak.

About a week after the nomination period ends, the public is able to provide input and cast their votes on the nominations. 16 products with the most votes then enter a bracket system, competing head-to-head for the crown.
